KEEP PUBLIC LANDS IN WASHOE COUNTY (NEVADA) INTACT

The Reno City Council and the Washoe County Commission recently passed an amendment to their regional plan calling for expansion of the city almost 30 miles north of its present boundary. This amendment, pushed by builders and developers, also calls for the disposal of vast tracts of public land to be used for "future service areas" to serve the new developments. This public land is presently important for wildlife and open space, and much of it is in a wild condition. When a hearing was held in Reno about a potential federal bill to dispose of the land, 200 people attended to state their opposition. No bill has been introduced as yet, but one could be as early as next year.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly opposes the wholesale disposal of public lands in Washoe County north of Reno in order to further the plans of developers.
