OPPOSE EFFORTS OF THE BLM TO LOG IN ROADLESS AREAS IN WESTERN OREGON

Background
:

Recently Senator Cantwell (D-WA) and Representative Inslee (D-WA) introduced a bill cited as the "National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Act" to protect inventoried roadless areas in the National Forest System. This bill would give permanent, statutory form to President Clinton's roadless area final rules for the National Forests.

At the same time, however, the Bush administration is working to overturn the Northwest Forest Plan on BLM lands in Oregon with its Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR). The WOPR is a frontal attack on BLM forests in Oregon, many of them roadless, and would undermine efforts to preserve roadless areas here and would be inconsistent with the bills Senator Cantwell and Rep. Inslee have sponsored.

The BLM has many worthy projects that need funding. Wasting funds on the WOPR is counterproductive and works against the interests of the American people.

Resolution:

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs urges the BLM to cease work on this destructive logging and project (WOPR) and further urges Congress to include language in the FY2008 Interior Appropriations that will prohibit the BLM from expending any federal funds on any further work on the WOPR after fiscal year 2007.
