RES. NO. 7:  SUPPORT REMOVING FOUR LOWER SNAKE RIVER DAMS TO RESTORE WILD SALMON TO NEVADA

BACKGROUND:

Nevada has a rich history with wild salmon and steelhead. Four rivers in Northern Nevada (the Owyhee, Bruneau, Jarbidge, and Salmon Falls Creek) once had robust salmon and steelhead runs. As part of the Columbia-Snake River Basin, Nevada has a legitimate claim to a seat at the table with other stakeholders who are working to restore declining salmon runs. Nevada lost its salmon because of the four hydroelectric dams, which were built on the Lower Snake River. These dams are now outdated and inefficient and need to be removed. The small amount of energy generated can be replaced with less destructive alternatives.

RESOLUTION:

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs supports the removal of the four lower Snake River dams in order to protect the long-term health and viability of Columbia-Snake River salmon and to lay the groundwork for eventually restoring wild salmon to Nevada's northern rivers.
