FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

NO. 7

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF A NATIONAL POLICY REGARDING THE USE OF PERSISTENT CHEMICALS IN THE ERADICATION OF THE GYPSY MOTH

Eradication programs in the United States has failed.

The immediate long term hazards of persistent chemicals to human health have not adequately been evaluated.

Persistent chemicals are harmful to bees, birds, aquatic organisms and other beneficial species including natural predators of the gypsy moth.

Less hazardous alternatives are available, e.g. biological controls.

Therefore, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs supports a national policy to develop long range pest control programs which utilize an integrated pest management approach featuring biological rather than persistent chemical controls.
