FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

THE ANCIENT FOREST PROTECTION ACT OF 1990
23.

ISSUE
The ancient forests of the United States are composed of ecosystems of plants, animals, micro-organisms, and soil older than the nation itself.  These forests once destroyed can never be restored, and therefore should be protected from damaging intrusion.

STATUS

With this in mind, there has been introduced into the Congress H.R.4492, known as the Ancient Forest Protection Act of 1990.  This bill would give interim protection to old growth forests on federal lands in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California pending the study by a responsible government agency of the areas set forth in the bill, and then further legislative protective measures enacted as indicated.

The bill has been co-sponsored by 124 Congressmen, all of whom, with few exceptions, are from east of the Mississippi.  In order to pass this legislation it is important that it be sponsored by Congressmen in the western states also.

WHAT TO DO

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs endorses H.R.4492 and urges its members to enlist the support of the bill by Congressmen from Washington, Oregon, and California as co-sponsors of the bill.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs further asks that its members call upon their Congressional delegations to reduce the authorized cut level in the forests of Washington, Oregon, and California to less than 2.5bbf in 1991.
