FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

REROUTING OF HIGHWAY 101 AT DEL NORTE COAST REDWOODS PARK

Not replaceable in less than a thousand years, California's old growth redwood forests are a unique and ancient flora now protected in the memorial groves in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.  These memorial groves are protected by the State Park Commission of the State of California as trustee for hundreds of people who have contributed to their protection and preservation in perpetuity.  Only 7 percent of the original redwood forest is now protected in public parks in California.

Caltrans has proposed a rerouting of highway 101 at Del Norte Coast Redwoods Park.  A suitable alternative route for highway 101 bypassing these groves is available with a route through cutover lands.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs opposes any highway construction which would destroy old growth (over 200 years old) in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park and urges the Government of California and Caltrans to seek a route outside Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park for the relocation of highway 101.
