OPPOSE WEAKENING OF THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA)--one of the strongest of our nation's environmental laws--which was passed by Congress and signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon.

Now, however, the present administration has launched a series of attacks on the ESA, such as weakening the regulations, failing to defend against industry lawsuits, not enforcing the law, and limiting money for listing and for habitat conservation plans. In addition, bills are now being pushed by anti-environmental leaders in Congress to weaken protections, including exempting private property owners and removing military lands from habitat protection.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly opposes the weakening of the Endangered Species Act by administrative action, legislation, or failure to provide adequate funding.
